This report reviews the transnational political and security problems currently facing the Central Sahel region. More specifically, it looks at 1) the poor governance, economic underdevelopment, and Islamist radicalization affecting the area; 2) how remote, weak or even repressive central governments have been supplanted by alternative forms of organization, including traditional authorities, community-based structures, Islamist movements, and criminal networks; and 3) assesses whether the current policies being pursued by national, regional and wider international actors to curb extremism, radicalization and even northward migration are working or not.
