This paper examines the key opportunities and risks the United States will face if the P5+1 countries can reach a deal with Iran in their negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program. More specifically, the author discusses 1) whether a deal will prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons; 2) whether a more moderate Iran will emerge following the deal; 3) if an agreement will help stabilize the Middle East; 4) whether an agreement will help strengthen the existing international nuclear non-proliferation regime; and 5) whether the deal will enable the US to focus more on security issues in Asia and Europe. He also discusses what policy action the US should take in the event of a deal.
