This brief discusses the broader significance of the May 2015 discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, for India's foreign policy. In particular, the author concentrates on how a potential deepening in Sino-Indian relations could affect 1) India's relations with other countries which have a strained relationship with China, such as Vietnam and Japan; 2) the wider debate over how India balances its relationship with both China and the US; and 3) the potential delinking of economic and strategic considerations in terms of how Delhi approaches its relationship with Beijing.
