This commentary argues that US and Arab military strategies across the Middle East and North Africa have failed to prevent the rise of jihadist groups in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya. The author argues that this is because they fail to recognize that the Middle East and North Africa are in the throes of a brutal process of change. Attempting to halt the process is futile, he continues. Stakeholders attempting to reestablish regional peace and security are ultimately better-off nurturing policies that encourage non-violent, non-sectarian change-even if it means a redrawing of the region’s map and regime change.
