This commentary looks at the anti-corruption campaign launched by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) using the example of former Chinese security czar Zhou Yongkang, who received a life sentence after a trial held behind closed doors on the 22nd of May 2015. These circumstances – a life sentence instead of the death penalty and the fact that the trial was held behind closed doors – lead the author to question whether there might not be a split in the top of the Party leadership. Such a split, he concludes, could mean that the CCP’s anti-corruption campaign might not see any more arrests in the foreseeable future.
