This E-Note contends that although the world has been relatively peaceful over the last few decades, maintaining the peace, and preserving the existing international order, is becoming more difficult. The reasons why include 1) America's retrenchment and the rise of China; 2) the slow dissolution of the US' once elaborate alliance system; 3) the appearance of new and disruptive technologies; 4) the growing competition for natural resources; 5) the proliferation of violent extremist organizations; and 6) less resources available for UN peace operations.
