This Insight explores how the strategic alignment between Australia, Japan and India could 1) act as a foundation for further cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, and 2) reinforce the existing rules-based order that exists there. As part of his analysis, the text’s author first discusses the security policies of the three states, the bilateral relations they have with each other, and the present status of US-China relations. He then speculates on what forms the trilateral cooperation could take in the future, including transforming China into a responsible stakeholder in the region and buttressing up the US’ role there. Finally, the author outlines why Australia is well placed to initiate Japanese-Indian-Australian cooperation and the benefits and risks that may be involved.
