This article examines the actions of the Indian Army against insurgent militant groups in the India-Myanmar border region and the impact of these on India’s domestic and diplomatic relations. The author notes that the Indian Army’s attempts to defeat these ethnic insurgent groups – fighting against both India and Myanmar – evoked adverse reactions among the local population and India’s South Asian neighbors, most notably Myanmar and Pakistan. The author concludes that a strategy combining continuous, effective negotiation and communication rather than covert, ad hoc, sporadic action seems to be a better strategy for India.
