This paper provides a short history of Australian naval shipbuilding and discusses the government's potential plan to launch a program for the continuous building of warships in the country. The authors also address the issues the government should consider when deciding whether to adopt this program including some of the costs and benefits of creating a continuous warship building program, the economic impact of building naval vessels in Australia, and the future of government owned naval shipbuilding enterprises. Finally, they offer recommendations for the Australian government on what strategies to adopt to manage the risks that could be involved in its future shipbuilding plans.
