This commentary examines how the fight against the so-called Islamic State is causing demographic shifts in the Middle East and thus complicating Kurdish aspirations for independence. In the last case, the text's author reminds us that non-Kurdish refugees now make up a third of Iraqi Kurdistan's population. With such a large influx of people, the author contends, the prospects for Kurdish independence have been significantly complicated, as have Arab-Kurdish relations.
