This paper argues that the P5+1-Iran nuclear deal agreed on in July 2015 will not lead to a significant rapprochement between Iran and the US, but only to the opportunity for a modest improvement in relations between the two countries. According to the author, the reasons for this include 1) Iran’s continuing anti-Americanism; 2) domestic politics in both countries; 3) an unchanged American view of Iran as being a state sponsor of terrorism; 4) US commitments to allies in the Middle East, primarily Israel and Saudi Arabia; and 5) the US' unwillingness to lift the sanctions against Iran.
