This paper looks at the introduction of the International Yoga Day (IYD) on June 21, 2015, which has been criticized as an attempt by Indian Prime Minister Modi to promote Hindu nationalism. The author argues that the controversy arose domestically because of Modi’s affiliation with Hindu nationalist groups, his failure to resolve inter-religious tensions, as well as the exaggeration of the issue by the Indian media. However, he also contends that internationally, the IYD is a successful soft power strategy for India, because it is a constant reminder of India’s cultural heritage and serves as an avenue for diplomatic exchanges.
