This commentary looks at the security implications of the growing appeal of the so-called Islamic State (IS) for former independence fighters of the Muslim Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) in Indonesia. In particular, the author highlights how this could lead to Aceh becoming a base for IS in Southeast Asia and how it could increase the possibility that other jihadists associated with radical groups in the region could join or become associated with IS.
