This article speculates on what might happen to Chinese-Taiwanese relations if the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen wins Taiwan's presidential election in January 2016. More specifically, the article's authors 1) analyze Beijing's concerns that Taipei will pursue national independence if Tsai is elected, despite his assurances to the contrary; and 2) consider how Chinese President Xi Jinping might personally react to Tsia's election. Given Xi's consistently hardline approach to Taiwan in the past, a post-election crisis may indeed be in the offing.
