This paper discusses power struggles within the ruling families of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as how the Saudi military intervention in Yemen against Shiite Houthi rebels has deepened fissures within the Saudi royal family. The author also looks at how these power struggles have taken on added significance at a time when stability in Saudi Arabia and the UAE is being challenged by internal dissent and external turmoil caused by the so-called Islamic State.
