This commentary considers what ASEAN’s Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) Initiative can do to combat the extreme ideologies of the so-called Islamic State and other groups. In particular, the commentary’s author looks at 1) what led to the establishment of GMM; 2) how ASEAN has promoted the concept of moderation in its region; 3) what it will take for the concept to become a truly viable anti-extremism tool; and 4) why the promotion of moderation is not just an issue for the Muslim community.
