This brief takes stock of both the economic and security situations in South Asia, including China's growing role in the region. The brief's author basically reminds us that South Asia has the lowest level of regional economic integration in the world, primarily because of 1) the rivalry between India-Pakistan; 2) the threats posed by terrorism and insurgencies in the region; 3) the disharmony between Hindus and Muslims in India; 4) the border dispute between India and Bangladesh; and 5) the problems created by Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar.
