This commentary discusses the possibility of a military confrontation between the US and China, some of the key factors that could inform such a conflict, and the implications of both these issues for South Asia. Among other issues, the author discusses 1) the factors that could lead to a conflict between China and the US 2) what lessons can be drawn from the Cold War in managing relations between China and the US; 3) the implications of China potentially developing an anti-ship ballistic missile capability and its expansion of its submarine fleet, particularly in light of the chance that the conflict between Beijing and Washington could take place in large part at sea; 4) where a confrontation between the US and China would most likely take place; and 5) what Pakistan's siding with China and India's inclination to side with the US could mean for South Asia.
