This commentary looks at how cyber-attacks and social media could affect the future of conflict in East Asia. Among other issues, the author 1) outlines why East Asian countries may focus on developing their cyber operation capabilities and strategies; 2) the problems of identifying who conducted a cyber-attack and why, as well as what this means for the possibility for cyber warfare to occur; 3) what part social media and information campaigns could play in countries’ efforts to influence each other’s populations; and 4) the vulnerabilities of defense systems to cyber-attacks and what this means for military operational capabilities.
