This commentary examines the reasons why China is adopting more stringent policies in the area of cybersecurity. More specifically, the author examines how these changes are informed by 1) China’s efforts to increase its national security, including issues related to software used by government departments sourced from the US; and 2) efforts by the government to control the dissemination of information over the internet.
