This commentary examines whether Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965 of its own free will or whether it was forced out. To answer this question, the author reviews the events that led up to the separation and argues that it was the then Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, who played the decisive role in leading Singapore to leave his country.
