This commentary discusses the reasons why Australia decided to recognize Singapore as a sovereign nation just after the latter gained independence from Malaysia in 1965 and the development of relations since. The author also outlines the state of relations between the two countries in 2015, the Australian perspective on the future course of relations with Singapore, and the main factors that underlie the positive view Australians have of Singapore.
