This paper focuses the alliance between the United States and Australia, what the two partners expect from it, and how they are adapting to a changing Asia-Pacific region. The paper's authors also focus on three critical mission areas of the alliance and the stresses and opportunities they represent. The core areas include 1) confronting security challenges outside the Asia-Pacific region; 2) shaping a new multilateral architecture within the region; and 3) maintaining maritime security. In all three areas US-Australia interests are converging, although the convergence is being complicated by the two countries’ different attitudes towards China. Finally, the paper's authors provide policy recommendations on how the US and Australia can strengthen their alliance.
