This commentary examines what Southeast Asian countries can learn from extremist websites and social media accounts about Southeast Asian foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq. More specifically, the authors discuss 1) the presence of such militants on social media; 2) the sources of information on Katibah Nusantara Lid Daulah Islamiyah, a Malaysian and Indonesian unit created within the so-called Islamic State as well as what they reveal about the unit’s operating structure, key individuals and implications for Southeast Asia; and 3) how countries and others can effectively use the information that terrorists and extremists post online to assess threats.
