This paper breaks down of the results of the Parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka held on August 17, 2015. The authors also discuss some of the reasons for the success of the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG) coalition led by the United National Party (UNP) in these elections. These include 1) the positive track record of the UNP in the National Unity Government (NUG); 2) support from the Tamils; 3) divisions in the opposing Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). They also 1) explain that although the SLFP did not do well in the elections, it is far from finished as a political party and 2) discuss some of the challenges and prospects the elected government will face.
