This paper discusses the threat posed to the civil aviation industry by cyber attacks and hackers. The key issues addressed by the author include 1) the threat posed by the possibility that hackers could gain information collected by the aviation industry on passengers; 2) the integrated nature of civil aviation and how the number of actors involved in the industry can lead to security challenges; 3) the increasing technical sophistication of civil aviation as well as the risks this could involve; and 4) the problems that could be created for civil aviation by differences in technological capabilities of countries in the ASEAN region.
