As the title indicates, this paper examines scientific cooperation in the South China Sea, with a particular focus on China’s role in this cooperation and how it figures into Beijing’s broader regional policy. More specifically, the author discusses 1) the shared priorities countries in the region have in such cooperation; 2) China’s leading role in launching regional scientific cooperation programs: 3) cooperation in the area of marine science and technology and how despite investment in environmental research, so far the results have been mediocre; and 4) what part scientific cooperation is playing in China’s efforts to increase its regional influence.
