This commentary discusses the impact that Indonesia’s crackdown on foreign fishing vessels operating in its waters has had on China’s fishing industry. The author explains that this policy, which forms part of Indonesia’s effort to revitalize its own fishing industry, has resulted in huge costs to Chinese fishing companies. He also contends that this development, which has shaken Chinese investors’ confidence, could have a negative impact on the prospect for China’s Maritime Silk Road initiative as well as Indonesia's own maritime ambitions.
