This paper argues that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program could benefit ISIS as it will allow the group to play on the fears among Sunni Muslims that the deal is an alliance between the West and Shiite Iran. The author also discusses 1) the impact the deal could have on sectarian violence in the Middle East and the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the region; 2) the adverse conditions of Sunnis in Iraq and Iran as well as in Syria under President al-Assad; and 3) how ISIS funding might be negatively affected by the introduction of Iranian oil into the world market.
