This commentary looks at China’s critical reaction to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent commemorative speech on Japan’s surrender in World War II. The commentary’s author argues that when it comes to repentance, Beijing continues to hold Japan to an almost impossibly high standard – indeed, a standard that can never be fulfilled. The author further points out that domestic politics within China compel Beijing to brush aside Japan's apologies.
