In light of a suggestion by Malaysian officials that ASEAN should create a security force in the South China Sea, this paper discusses how the search and rescue at sea elements of such a force could play a part in establishing principles of maritime security cooperation between ASEAN countries. The author then examines the EU's maritime security strategy and what lessons ASEAN can learn from the EU on how to establish efficient and effective multilateral coordination in the maritime domain.
