This paper surveys the capabilities of the Australian Army, particularly in the following areas -- artillery, small arms, personal protection, ground mobility, armored fighting vehicles, aviation and command and control. Because the main focus of the Australian Army since 2010 has been on sustaining combat, training, stabilization and peacekeeping operations, the service still suffers from three problems. It needs to 1) recapitalize its equipment, 2) add depth to its specialized forces, and 3) overcome significant shortfalls in protected mobility and armored fighting vehicles, airborne armed reconnaissance assets, and land-based air defense systems.
