This commentary looks at Indonesia’s plans to acquire more submarines in order to boost its maritime defense capabilities. However, before the country acquires the subs it will have to 1) address multiple “housekeeping issues,” 2) revamp its current strategic policy guidelines, and 3) generally enhance its support of the navy. (Note: The housekeeping issues center on ensuring the navy has technologically-proficient and experienced officers, sufficient maintenance capabilities and logistical support, and the cooperation of the other military services.)
