This commentary explores the bloody role Shi’ite militias play as stakeholders in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. In addition to tracing their support for Assad’s regime and hostility towards ISIS, the text’s author looks at the militias' histories and contends that despite their own jihadi narrative, large presence and brutality, they remain largely unnoticed and unaccountable.
