This paper jumps into the debate over whether the UK should retain its nuclear weapons or not. More specifically, its author contemplates 1) the political-military structures in NATO that influence the UK’s nuclear weapons policy, and vice versa; 2) the vital importance of the UK’s contribution to the Alliance’s nuclear deterrence; and 3) the implications for NATO-UK relations if the latter does not replace its Trident submarines. As the paper’s author sees it, the British Government and the NATO Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) need to state explicitly how important a nuclear-capable UK is to the Alliance.
