This brief focuses on two extra-regional integration projects in the South Caucasus – the European Union Association Agreement and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union – and how they might further destabilize and fragment the area. Indeed, to buttress up its conflict prevention efforts in Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh and South Ossetia, the EU should 1) link its European Neighborhood Policy more firmly with its and Common Foreign and Security Policy, and 2) pay greater heed to Russia's interests in the South Caucasus region.
