This brief focuses on the Egyptian government’s ever-increasing authoritarianism, which has its origins in the military coup of mid-2013. More specifically, the text’s author zeros in on 1) the systematic uprooting of political pluralism within Egypt; 2) the EU’s struggles to preserve a values-based relationship with its southern neighbor; and 3) the US’ “hard security” approach towards Egyptian relations. The author's ultimate conclusion is that, rhetoric aside, no external player genuinely supported a democratic transition in Egypt. They were just too worried about the country's and region's future stability.
