This brief examines 1) the relationship between the Turkish Cypriot community and Turkey, and 2) how the link has fared since reunification talks resumed over Cyprus in April 2015. As the brief’s author sees it, the election of Mustafa Akıncı as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community has improved the odds of the island eventually reunifying itself, particularly because of the esteem Akinci enjoys among Greeks. The open question, however, is how the Turkish government, which has recently gravitated towards hyper-nationalism and acting out its neo-imperial dreams, would react to the two Cypriot communities creating a new federal state.
