How have religion and secularism shaped people's identities in the Middle East? This text’s answer highlights 1) Islam’s role in molding the pre-modern political identity of the region; 2) the alterations the religion underwent because of European colonialism, indigenous reformers and 20th century ideological conflicts; and 3) the changes wrought by the Arab Spring.
