This backgrounder examines the Arms Trade Treaty-related (ATT) activities that occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2011 to the present. More specifically, the text's authors 1) discuss how the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) impacted the region; 2) sketch the role of African states in and in relationship to the ATT; 3) summarize the areas where the states require further assistance in implementing the Treaty; and 4) offer recommendations on future cooperation and assistance activities, including the measures the ATT Secretariat can put in place to facilitate the matching of needs and resources.
