This commentary wonders whether the objectives identified in Australia’s new Defense White Paper are actually achievable. It’s particularly critical of the White Paper’s 1) belief that the United States will remain the preeminent global military power until 2035; 2) unwillingness to discuss the basic and evolving nature of US-China relations; and 3) anticipation of increased military spending, despite Australia’s slow economic growth. Ultimately, the commentary's author believes that the White Paper is more about sending political signals than laying out goals that are truly achievable.
