This paper explores the motives behind the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) initiative launched by China. The text’s author argues that Beijing’s incentives for the LMC are to 1) expand regional economic cooperation into untapped areas; 2) establish higher levels of sub-regional economic cooperation; and 3) spread China’s presence and interests in this part of Asia.
