This report takes stock of the field of sustainable urban development (SUD) and contemplates how Denmark might strengthen its focus on cities as part of the SDG agenda. In particular, the text's authors 1) review the cutting-edge research that’s being done on urban governance and sustainable development; 2) map out the current global trends and actors in SUD; and 3) include a case study of Jakarta in order to show how the politics of sustainable development play themselves out in a dynamic but flood-prone megacity. Finally, the authors offer recommendations on how to strengthen urban governance in multi-prong ways.
