This comment contends that the Baltic Sea region represents an obvious and unavoidable test case for European security. More specifically, the text's authors explore 1) the fears Nordic-Baltic states have about saber-rattling Russia; 2) the complicated security factors that exist in the region; 3) the fragmented defense cooperation that also exists there; 4) how all the previous factors pose genuine challenges for both Europe and NATO; 5) possible ways to improve regional security; and 6) the role Germany could and should play in Nordic-Baltic security.
