This commentary contends that the root cause of violence and extremism in the Middle East is largely political rather than religious. Indeed, the real culprits behind the region's troubles are regional power shifts and the resulting struggle for a new political order. The text's author concludes that if we fail to acknowledge this truth and address the political aspirations of key regional actors, then the current violence will only worsen.
