This commentary reviews regional efforts to establish maritime security in the Malacca Strait, especially since the 1990s. The text particularly focuses on 1) the impediments to the efforts thus far; 2) the factors that led to the multinational Malacca Strait Patrols (MSP) initiative in 2006; and 3) the lessons the MSP model provides Southeast Asia.
