This publication examines geopolitical rivalries affiliated with 5G infrastructures and their implications for the EU. The text’s author contends that 1) the rapid growth of China’s 5G industry is challenging the US’ historic “edge” in technological innovation; 2) the US considers the expansion of Chinese 5G not only an economic challenge but also a geopolitical threat, as 5G technology could provide China’s government with access to critical information; 3) the EU struggles to find its place in this changing environment – nevertheless, the race to 5G offers it an opportunity to strengthen its technological sovereignty through a common strategy towards foreign telecommunications companies and a coherent cybersecurity policy; and more.
