The author of this publication examines the 7th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the first meeting of the parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. She provides an introduction to both protocols as well as an analysis of the meetings, before she discusses the role played by NGOs in advocating conservation and protection policies and in pinpointing to shortfalls that currently exist in international legal mechanisms.
