This report on the 5th World Social Forum (WSF) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, offers background information on the WSF and outlines key issues such as poverty, debt, trade, human rights, the environment and war. The 2005 WSF was marked by some significant firsts, namely the inclusion of political personalities, a new bottom-up methodology and the release of a manifesto by key WSF actors. Some challenges the WSF might face in the future are also discussed.
