This report examines the genomics debate from an NGO perspective. The author argues that while many NGOs have not engaged in the debate, they are concerned about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as they relate to food safety, food security and the environment. The author also asks if and how civil society is responding to rapidly emerging technologies, and whether it has revised its position with new developments in gene technology. She provides an NGO typology and outlines the positions and priorities of the various NGOs active in this debate.
